Funny Bones: A Spooky Guide to Spinal Health 🎃💀

Halloween is creeping up, and at The Chiropractic Hub, we’re getting into the spooky spirit with a look at your “funny bones” – your skeleton! So, let’s dive into a few fun facts about your bones and why keeping them in good shape is no laughing matter! We promise no tricks here, only treats for your spinal health (and a lot of questionable Halloween puns).

Why Are They Called “Funny Bones” Anyway?

We’ve all experienced that sudden, tingling sensation when we hit our elbow in just the wrong spot. That’s the “funny bone” – but it’s not really a bone at all! What you’re hitting is the ulnar nerve, which runs down the inside of your arm. The nerve is so exposed in the elbow area that even a little bump can send shocks down your arm, causing a strange, sometimes painful “funny” sensation. Nerves are integral to our body functioning, from the repair of cells to keeping us out of danger – when something scary happens our reflexes make us jump. How cool is that? We have an automatic protection system too!

The Spookiness of Spinal Misalignments

A healthy spine keeps your body moving like a well-oiled machine. However, just like a creaking haunted house, if your spine isn’t properly aligned, things can get scary. Subluxations (misalignments in your spine) can cause nerve interference — leading to symptoms like pain, headaches, stiffness, and even reduce your body's ability to communicate efficiently with the brain. This is why we get mixed signals and symptoms.

If you’re feeling like a stiff skeleton and experiencing any back pain, stiffness, or discomfort, it's a likely sign your body is crying out for some TLC.

Spine-Tingling Tips for Spinal Health

Here are a few tips to keep your spine in tip-top shape this Halloween season (and beyond):

  1. Avoid Carrying Heavy Loads: Make sure you're not overloading your spine, whether it’s moving boxes or carrying your daily bag – always lift with your legs with a straight back, keeping loads light and balanced.

  2. Watch Your Posture: Remember to maintain good posture to avoid looking goulish. If you are sat at a desk all day make sure your feet are flat on the floor and your screen is at eye level, get up and move every 40 mins without fail or you will feel like a zombie

  3. Stay Active: Your bones need to move! Staying active helps your joints and spine stay healthy. Go for a walk at lunch, do some stretching between meetings, or even do the monster mash or Thriller dance to keep things limber. (videos will be requested!)

  4. Get Adjusted: An adjustment helps with correct movement in the spine to help keep you feeling your best and ready to face the day without any scary aches or pains 🎃

Don’t let your bones get the last laugh!

Happy Halloween from The Chiropractic Hub! 🎃👻
